Phase 1
I looked at my drawings & discovered that there's a popular character I missed. I needed to come up with a Lycan of my own!
I'm going for a more human approach rather than the animalistic. But to give the impression that Wolfman is just half of the first, I drew him in an awkward pose.
His shoulders & part of the torso are hunched, bringing the arms forward. His head is tilted - animals, especially dogs, do this when they notice something odd.
The oval shapes on both his sides are for his wolf minions. |
Phase 2
Added facial features, ears & a thick mass of hair to the head.
Added musculature to the body. Not so much on the hips & legs as I plan to give him a wolf pelt to cover them.
I'll be looking at photos of wolves on the net to get some ideas for his wolf minions, which I plan to sketch in on the next. |
Phase 3
The original plan was to position the wolf minions facing forward. But, 3 pairs of eyes looking straight at you didn't seem like a good idea after all.
The wolf on the left looks too much like a dog. I'll have to make changes.
The background is predictably, a forest setting at night. I'm contemplating on pulling off a full moon on the far back. What do you think? |
Phase 4
I designed a costume for Wolfman. He has a short cape, a talisman, a pelt around his hips (texture will be obvious when rendered in ink), a belt to secure it, leather bracelet & sandals.
It's a wonder how a slight bend on the left wolf's foreleg changed its expression. He looks alert now. |
Phase 5
I gave Wolfman a chain whip & a dagger.
I also fluffed up the wolves' coats.
Delineated & cleaned up lines. |
Phase 6
I drew the forest setting. I did not add leaves/foliage on the trees yet because I am half-considering doing away with them. |
Phase 7
Outlined all objects in ink. I didn't make any changes as I inked. In fact, I religiously stuck to the final sketch!
Wolfman looks disfigured for now because his torso & arms are too long for his legs. Shadowing will fix that. It'll create the illusion of foreshortening once he's rendered. |
Phase 8
Rendered hair, cloak, face & body.
The shadowing on the arms still need some refining.
I regret overshadowing on the left wrist. But it's nothing that white ink can't fix.
I am particularly happy with my rendering on the face. It turned out just as I imagined it to! |
Phase 9
Rendered wolves. All those short strokes made my wrist hurt. I'm generally happy with the fur except that I'll have to fix the left wolf's face markings - he looks like he has really bushy brows! |
Phase 10
Added texture to tree trunks & branches. I still have not decided whether to render them with or without foliage.
Outlined the Wolfman's chain whip with white ink to "pull it out" from blending into the wolve's dark fur.
The wolfman's kilt is yet to be rendered. I don't know if I should go through with wolf pelt or just tough animal hide. Again, another decision to make.
The bushes & grass are now Shaded-in. The floor is, too; a rocky path, on which the three figures are standing has been added. This idea came to me as I was working - completely out of the blue! |
Phase 11
Added foliage to trees & a black background behind them.
The drawing looks pretty good now but it does not have the depth that I want to achieve yet.
The trees look as if they are on the same plane as the Wolfman. So, they're competing with the focal point, in a way. |
Phase 12
Wolfman is finished!
Darkened the tree trunks & branches a shade then, darkened their foliage two shades.
I added speckles of white on the black background as stars.
I outlined most of the Wolfman's figure with white. Now, he looks as if he's coming out of the dark! |
