Captain Nemo & The Mermaid
Captain Nemo, also known as Prince Dakkar, is a character created by Jules Verne, whom he featured in 2 novels: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1870) & The Mysterious Island (1874). Nemo was the son of an Indian Raja & a scientific genius who roams the depths of the sea aboard his submarine, the Nautilus. Nemo outwardly projects a stern, controlled confidence but is wracked by remorse over deaths of his crew members & even of enemy sailors. He believes that they have all been driven to sea because there was no fitting & proper place for them on land. This illustration features Nemo aboard the Nautilus, the Mermaid is seen through the viewing glass. I imagined the Mermaid acting as his guide through unexplored realms of the deep. |

Phase 1I just watched the 1960's Disney rendition of Jules Verne's 20000 Leagues Under the Sea, when I found myself inspired to create my favorite character in the title - Captain Nemo. What better way to visually describe his captainship than a wheel, a viewing glass & a mermaid?! |

Phase 9Added sci-fi panels in background. Shaded-in the frames of the viewing glass. I created the look of sleek glossy black but I should have used the same shading I did on the panels! They look too graphic that they divert the viewer's attention from Captain Nemo! But, too late for that now... |
Phase 10Rendered sci-fi panels & overhead electronics/wires. Shaded-in gradient shadows overhead using pointillist technique to create the illusion of a high ceiling. Completed! |
