The Adventurer & His Basilisk

In Norse Mythology, Thor was the son of Odin (the chief god) & Fjorgyn (Earth). He was known to be temperamental like the storm & the strongest among all the gods in Asgard.

A young wizard hatched his first dragon egg not so long ago - or so he thought. To his surprise, it wasn't a dragon but a basilisk! Still, a pair of wings is a pair of wings - the unlikely transport will get him to where he needs to go, nevertheless! The pair is off to an adventure with the object of collecting magical artifacts from all ends of the earth in mind.

In European bestiaries & legends, a basilisk is a legendary reptile reputed to be king of serpents & said to have the power to cause death with a single glance.

The Making of The Adventurer & His Basilisk

How'd I do it? Watch how I work! Here are scanned images of the illustration in development! See The Adventurer & His Basilisk in the works, from preliminary pencil sketch to the final pen & ink drawing! These phase-by-phase drawings may also give you some ideas for your own drawings!

Phase 1

I found an old sketch I set aside, which I never got around to rendering.

I will have to change parts here & there to make this sketch good enough to render!

Phase 2

Scaled down the Basilisk's head & neck as they previously looked to cumbersome.

Added reptilian blisters along the Basilisk's back, where the protruding spine rests.

Changed the Adventurer's face entirely!

Added more locks of "windswept" hair around the Adventurer's face.

Changed the Adventurer's cape - instead of just hanging down, it should follow the direction of the hair, which is from left-right.

Scaled down the Adventurer's arm around the Basilisk's neck, as well as his feet. Note that the left foot now rests on the Basilisk's coil. Previously, it was against the midsection of the Basilisk.

Phase 3

The Basilisk's wings don't look strong enough to carry their weight so I lengthened it & added a tail, too!

Outlined in ink!

Phase 4

Shaded-in the Basilisk's spines & blocked-in the upper part of his wings & tail ends.

Shaded-in the Adventurer's hair & skin (face, arms, feet).

Phase 5

Shaded-in the Adventurer's costume & ornaments, as well as the rest of Basilisk's wings.

The Adventurer's chain mail was rendered by simply drawing rows of inverted S's.

Phase 6

Shaded-in the Adventurer's staff & cape, as well as the Basilisk's eyelids.

Blocked-in the Basilisk's reptilian blisters.

Phase 7

Shaded-in the Basilisk's eyes & leathery hide

Phase 8

Added diagonal shafts of light for the top part of the background & clouds for the bottom part of the background.

Shaded-in the top background. The shafts of light are left white to create the illusion of brightness. But, they dissolve as they meet the clouds, so I covered their ends in fading dots/points (pointillist technique).

Phase 9

Shaded-in the clouds in the bottom background.

Finished!
